About Thrive Counseling for Healing and Connection
Who We Are & Why We Built This Practice
Thrive Counseling for Healing and Connection (services for individuals) and We Thrive Together (services for couples, families & groups) were born out of the passion of two therapists, each with over 20 years experience serving a variety populations and mental health concerns in our Virginia communities. Our goal is two-fold, first, to provide a space for meeting individuals, couples, and families in deep places where meaningful growth happens; and second, to be a center of excellence for training and development of mental health clinicians in Fredericksburg and throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Beth has been a certified trauma therapist for over 15 years and has had a passion for serving women with issues of trauma and other life transitions for more than 20 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. More recently, she has focused her education and training on couples work and primarily uses an Emotionally Focused Therapy lens with additional leanings on PACT and RLT couples therapy modalities. She has been supervising clinicians since 2005 and finds great pleasure watching clinicians find their niche and pursue intensive trainings to have the confidence to provide true healing to their clients.
Sarah received her Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 and has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for almost 20 years. She focused much of her studies on Attachment Theory and uses this as the foundation of her work with clients. Sarah is dedicated to her own clinical training and that of new clinicians in the field. She enjoys practice management and connecting clients with therapists that she feels can best serve their needs. She believes strongly that a strong practice manager can provide the clinical direction needed as clients enter into the therapeutic setting.
Beth and Sarah have both worked as private practice clinicians, in community mental health, and the hospital settings in clinical and administrative roles. With our mixture of experience, we are deeply dedicated to serving our community as a whole, and are committed to arming clinicians with the skills and tools to work with clients at all levels of need.
Through our commitment to excellence and ongoing professional development, we strive to provide the best care for our clients and to support the next generation of mental health professionals. We are proud to be a part of the healing journey for individuals, couples, and families in our community and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on the mental health landscape in Virginia. We offer specialized therapy for women, men, teens, tweens, children, and young adults — in person in Fredericksburg and online across Virginia. Our Core Beliefs and Guiding Principles
Connection
As human beings we are wired for connection. To build secure attachment we practice establishing safety, attunement, and validation in our practice.
Non-Pathologizing
We understand, organize, and heal human struggles at their core and do not take a pathologizing approach to our client’s difficulties.
Professional Growth
We are committed to the clinical growth of our clinicians. We value continuous learning and becoming experts in specific modalities to support our clients most effectively.
Personal Growth
We believe a therapist can only take their clients as far as they are willing to go. Therefore we promote continuous self-care and personal growth among our clinicians.
Curiosity
We aim to be learners rather than knowers. Being teachable and seeing clients as experts in their situations are both essential for us to work in collaboration.
Thriving Values
Authenticity, humor, generosity, and clarity are important values that add to safety and connection. These values promote an environment for us all to thrive.

Thrive Counseling for Healing and Connection is a specialized group practice — meaning every therapist on our team has a specific area of focus rather than trying to work with everyone. When you reach out, our founders personally match you with the clinician whose training and experience best fits your specific situation. You don't have to figure out who to choose on your own. We also operate a sister practice, We Thrive Together, for couples, families, and groups — so whatever you're navigating, there's a place for you within our community.

Thrive Counseling for Healing and Connection was founded by Beth Collins, LCSW and Sarah McClelland, LCSW — two licensed clinicians each with over 20 years of experience in private practice, community mental health, and hospital settings. Beth specializes in trauma therapy and couples work and is working toward certification as an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist. Sarah specializes in attachment theory, practice management, and connecting clients with the right therapist. Together they built Thrive with two goals — providing deep, specialized care for clients and creating a center of excellence for training the next generation of mental health clinicians in Virginia.

When you reach out through our Connect page, our founders review your situation and personally match you with the therapist on our team whose training, experience, and approach best fits your needs. You don't have to sort through profiles and make a choice on your own — that's our job. If at any point the fit doesn't feel right, we stay involved and help you navigate that too. Getting the match right matters deeply to us, because the right therapeutic relationship is where healing begins.
