Online Therapy Across Virginia

Thrive's Online Therapy

Accessible, Compassionate Help — Wherever You Are

Finding a therapist who truly understands can feel overwhelming — especially when you live far from major cities or your schedule makes in-person sessions difficult. At Thrive Counseling for Healing and Connection, we offer online therapy in Virginia through secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions across the state.

Whether you're in a rural community, balancing college life, or managing work and family responsibilities, online therapy provides a private, convenient way to access meaningful support from the comfort of your home — without compromising quality or connection.

Why Clients Choose Online Therapy?

Life can be unpredictable — that’s why flexibility matters.
Online sessions at Thrive allow you to:

  • Connect from the comfort of your home or dorm

  • Fit a session into your lunch break — no commute means therapy doesn't have to cut into your evenings or family time

  • Save travel time and reduce stress

  • Access therapy even if local options are limited

  • Maintain privacy and consistency while moving or studying out of town

  • Continue care during breaks, internships, or transitions

How Does It Work?

Our therapists meet with clients through a secure video platform that complies with all privacy laws. You’ll receive the same trauma-informed, evidence-based care — EMDR, CBT, DBT, and EFT — that we offer in person in Fredericksburg. We’ll start by learning your goals, matching you with the right therapist, and creating a plan that works for your schedule and needs.

Where Do We Serve?

Our online therapy services are available to clients anywhere in Virginia, including rural and underserved communities, college towns, and metropolitan areas.

We regularly work with college students and young adults attending universities across Virginia, including large public universities, STEM-focused programs, creative campuses, and predominantly Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)

Questions About Online Therapy in Virginia

Not sure if online therapy is right for you? Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.

  • Yes. Research consistently shows online therapy is equally effective as in-person care for anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship stress. Our therapists bring the same depth and evidence-based approaches to virtual sessions as they do in our Fredericksburg office — the screen doesn't change the quality of the connection. And because our founders are still personally involved in your therapist match — even for telehealth clients across Virginia — you're getting the same thoughtful, intentional care regardless of where you live in the state.

  • Not much — just a private space where you feel comfortable talking, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera. A phone, tablet, or computer all work perfectly. We use SimplePractice, a secure HIPAA-compliant video platform that requires no special software or downloads. You'll receive a link before your session and click to join — it's that simple. We do ask that you find a dedicated private space for your session — somewhere you won't be overheard or interrupted, and where you're not driving. Therapy works best when you can be fully present, and having a space that feels safe and contained helps protect the work you're doing. Many clients use a quiet bedroom, a parked car, or a private office — the location doesn't have to be perfect, just private.

  • We offer telehealth therapy for teens, tweens, and young adults anywhere in Virginia. For younger children, our play therapy and sandtray therapy services are offered in person at our Fredericksburg, VA office — these approaches rely on physical materials and hands-on engagement that work best face to face. That said, every child is different. If telehealth is the only option for your family, our therapists will have an individual conversation with you about what might work best for your child's age, needs, and circumstances. One thing that matters deeply in any format — in person or online — is the relationship between your child and their therapist. We take time to build trust and safety before diving into the hard stuff. Parents play an important role in supporting that process by giving their child space to develop their own relationship with their therapist — a relationship that belongs to them. The therapy room, whether physical or virtual, works best when it feels like a private, safe space that is truly theirs. We never want access to be a barrier — reach out and we'll figure it out together.

  • Getting started is simpler than you might think. Reach out through our website and tell us a little about what you're looking for — you don't need to have it all figured out before you contact us. Our founders — both seasoned licensed therapists — are personally involved in matching you with the right clinician based on your goals, life stage, location, and what you're navigating. Once we've found your match, we'll get your first session scheduled and walk you through everything you need to know about using our secure video platform. There's no pressure and no commitment required to have that first conversation. If you're anywhere in Virginia — from Northern Virginia to Hampton Roads, Richmond to rural Southwest Virginia — we're here and we're ready to help you find the right fit.

  • es. Thrive Counseling accepts most major insurance plans including Anthem BCBS, Aetna, United Behavioral Health, and most Medicaid products for telehealth sessions across Virginia. Online therapy through Thrive is billed the same way as in-person sessions — you can use your insurance benefits whether you're in Fredericksburg or anywhere else in the state. We also supply superbills for clients with out of network coverage.
