Bariatric Psychological Evaluations in Virginia

Structured Telehealth Assessments & Optional Ongoing Support

Weight Loss Surgery Psychological Clearance VA

Thrive Counseling for Healing & Connection is a Virginia-based mental health practice providing structured bariatric psychological assessments and trauma-informed therapeutic support via telehealth throughout the state. Preparing for bariatric surgery is both a medical and psychological process.

Our approach is structured, clinically thorough, and aligned with surgical program standards. In addition to required evaluations, we offer an optional continuity-of-care model to support long-term emotional and behavioral success.

Comprehensive Bariatric Psychological Assessment

Our bariatric psychological evaluations are designed to assess readiness, stability, and long-term behavioral sustainability.

Each evaluation includes:

  • Comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment

  • Weight history and dieting history review

  • Emotional and behavioral eating screening

  • Mood and psychiatric stability evaluation

  • Substance use and addiction risk screening

  • Trauma and attachment history assessment

  • Readiness for post-surgical lifestyle changes

  • Social support and environmental stability review

  • Clear clinical recommendations

Reports are professionally formatted to meet surgical documentation requirements.

Evaluations are finalized following completion of required sessions and released once financial obligations are resolved (including insurance reimbursement, copays, deductibles, or self-pay balance). Patients are encouraged to begin the evaluation process early in their surgical planning timeline.

Optional Ongoing Support Model

While many individuals complete only the required evaluation, Thrive also offers an optional, structured support model for those who desire continued care.

Participation in therapy is never required for clearance unless clinically indicated. However, some patients benefit from additional support before or after surgery to strengthen long-term outcomes.

Phase 1: Readiness & Stabilization (Pre-Surgery)

When appropriate, therapy may focus on:

  • Emotional regulation skills

  • Addressing emotional or stress-related eating patterns

  • Trauma-informed stabilization

  • Strengthening accountability and support systems

  • Preparing for behavioral and relational changes

Phase 2: Early Adjustment (0–6 Months Post-Surgery)

Support may address:

  • Identity and body image shifts

  • Emotional regulation without food-based coping

  • Relationship and family dynamics

  • Alcohol sensitivity and addiction transfer awareness

  • Adjustment to rapid physiological change

Phase 3: Long-Term Maintenance & Integration

Long-term therapy may support:

  • Sustainable behavioral patterns

  • Relapse prevention strategies

  • Emotional resilience

  • Integration of physical transformation with psychological health

  • Ongoing relational adjustment

Optional Group-Based Behavioral Health Support

In addition to individual therapy, Thrive offers structured telehealth-based psycho-educational and therapy groups for bariatric patients.

These groups may be offered pre- or post-operatively and are designed to provide:

  • Education on emotional regulation and behavioral sustainability

  • Support during identity and lifestyle transitions

  • Guidance on coping without food-based regulation

  • Discussion of alcohol sensitivity and addiction transfer risk

  • Reinforcement of long-term adherence strategies

Participation in group support is optional and is not required for surgical clearance. Groups are provided through Thrive Counseling for Healing & Connection under a behavioral health treatment model when clinically appropriate.

Why Psychological Support Matters in Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery alters metabolism, hormonal systems, and reward pathways. Emotional regulation strategies often require adjustment following surgery.

A structured psychological evaluation — and optional therapeutic support — may help:

  • Improve post-operative adherence

  • Reduce risk of addiction transfer

  • Strengthen emotional stability

  • Support relational adjustment

  • Promote sustainable long-term outcomes

At Thrive, our goal is not only surgical clearance — but durable behavioral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the evaluation be completed fully via telehealth?

Yes. All bariatric psychological evaluations are conducted through secure telehealth for Virginia residents. If you are wanting an in-person evaluation, we will work with you to make that happen in our Fredericksburg, Virginia office.

Is therapy required after the evaluation?

No. Ongoing therapy is not required for surgical clearance unless specific stabilization is clinically indicated during the evaluation process.

The bariatric psychological evaluation is a structured, assessment-focused service. Once the evaluation is completed and the report is finalized, that episode of care is considered complete.

Some individuals choose to begin therapy as a separate, ongoing service to receive additional support before or after surgery. Participation in therapy is entirely optional.

When is the report released?

Reports are finalized after required sessions are completed and released once financial obligations are resolved.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept many insurance plans. Patients are informed of financial expectations prior to beginning the evaluation process.
