What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — EMDR — is an evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain process and integrate distressing memories in a more adaptive way. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro and extensively researched over the past three decades, EMDR is recognized by the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to describe your experiences in detail or complete homework between sessions. Instead it works by activating the brain's natural healing processes through bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — while you hold a distressing memory in mind. Over time this allows painful experiences to be processed and stored in a way that no longer triggers the same emotional intensity.

How EMDR Works

During an EMDR session your therapist will guide you through a structured process that includes identifying a target memory or experience, noticing the thoughts, emotions, and body sensations connected to it, and then processing through sets of bilateral stimulation while you observe what arises — much like watching scenery pass outside a train window.

As processing continues the memory becomes less emotionally charged. Most clients find that they can recall the experience without the same level of distress — and that the negative beliefs connected to it begin to shift toward something more adaptive and self-compassionate.

EMDR is paced collaboratively and always begins with establishing emotional safety and stabilization before any trauma processing begins.

Questions About EMDR Therapy

  • Traditional talk therapy focuses on understanding and processing experiences through conversation. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to activate the brain's natural information processing system, allowing distressing memories to be reprocessed at a neurological level. Many clients find EMDR effective for experiences that have been difficult to resolve through conversation alone. It does not require you to describe traumatic events in detail.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on the nature and complexity of what you're processing. Some clients experience significant relief with a focused number of sessions targeting a specific memory or experience. Others with more complex trauma histories benefit from a longer course of treatment. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to pace the process based on your readiness, capacity, and goals.

  • Yes — EMDR is provided by licensed clinicians and is billed as standard psychotherapy. Most major insurance plans accepted at Thrive cover EMDR sessions the same way they cover regular therapy sessions.

  • No. One of the distinguishing features of EMDR is that it does not require you to describe traumatic experiences in detail. Your therapist will ask you to hold a memory in mind and notice what arises — but you are never required to narrate or relive the experience verbally. Many clients find this aspect of EMDR makes it feel more manageable than they expected.

  • Yes. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy with an extensive research base supporting its safety and effectiveness. At Thrive, EMDR is always introduced after a period of stabilization and safety-building — your therapist will not begin trauma processing until you have established sufficient emotional regulation and grounding tools. The process is always collaborative and paced according to your readiness.

  • Yes. EMDR can be effectively delivered through secure online sessions. Thrive offers telehealth EMDR for clients across Virginia. Your therapist will guide you through the bilateral stimulation component using a screen-based method — many clients find online EMDR just as effective as in-person sessions.
